Report Todd McLellan to be named Edmonton Oilers head coach

One of the big names in a crowded head coaching market is off the board.Todd McLellan, most recently the head coach of the , will be tasked with guiding the out of their rebuilding phase and into something a bit more competitive. He is expected to be formally announced as the new head coach as early as Tuesday .It has long been speculated that the Oilers would be the destination for McLellan after he met with new president and general manager Peter Chiarelli weeks ago while at the IIHF World Championship in Prague.The 47-year-old was behind the bench in San Jose for seven seasons. He posted 311 wins over his tenure, but the Sharks never made it past the Western Conference Final in six trips to the playoffs. After mi sing the postseason this year, he and the club agreed at the end of the season to mutually part ways, freeing him up to find a new team.McLellan will replace interim head coach Todd Nelson, who has been on the job since December after Dallas Eakins was fired. Nelson went 17-25-9 as the Oilers played out another disappointing season. Of course, expectations regarding the Edmonton club have changed since it won the draft lottery, securing the opportunity to select uberprospect Connor McDavid with the first overall pick.
